Vedic Mathematics – Session 1

Baudhik for 03/11/12

Vedic Mathematics – Session 1

What is it?
Vedic Mathemetics is a system of math which is based on list of 16 basic Sutras (aphorisms). This Sutra can be applied to number of ways to calculation and algebra in education systems and someone can achieve greater success in Math. This is not to say it is a total replacement of Math being taught in school or other classes you take.

Why are we covering in baudhik ?
We are covering it in Baudhik because this Vedic Math is attached to our religion Hindusim and it is believed that Vedic Math is based on discovered by studying Vedas which are set of sacred ancient Hindu Texts. Besides it's Indin origin, someone can learn it and it can help anyone to do hard math problems mentally quickly and easily. It is flexible and can make Math creative and interesting.

What's that we are going to learn from this ?
In baudhik sessions we are going to introduce you all to Vedic Math and what are those sutras and we will practice some. It will be group activity and fun and learning Math. If you are more interested then you can always explore more or ask your parents to help you. We can provide resources.

Who discovered it and how it is different from math you learn from day-to-day classes in school?
Vedic Math was discovered by a Sri Bharti Krishna Tirthji ( 1884 – 1960). He was a scholar of Sankrit, Mathematics and Philosophy and he studied our Sanskrit Texts Vedas deeply and immensely and found out this system and did research. Based on his research he concluded that all of mathematics is based on 16 Sutras or word-formulae.

16 Sutras
Vedic mathematics is based on sixteen sūtras which serve as tool (instructions) to deal with several mathematics problems, Below is a list of the sūtras, translated from Sanskrit into English:

The main Sutras.

Example and Tutorial
Important thing to remember is that for each Math problem you have to think which Sutra to apply.
Let's work on few math problems together using 2 formulas.

Sutra : All from 9 and the last from 10.
  • For example 1000 - 357 = 643
We simply take each figure in 357 from 9 and the last figure from 10.

    So the answer is 1000 - 357 = 643

So that brings us an answer.

This always works for subtractions from numbers consisting of a 1 followed by noughts: 100; 1000; 10,000 etc.
    Can you try these ?
        1000 – 777
        10000 – 4444
        1000 – 88
        100 – 52

Next Week We will continue 1 more Sutra if everyone is interested.
    That is Vertically and Cross-wise.
